Right now I have a 31"X31"X72" tent with a 400 watt hid with a super wing reflector. Also running 48"x48"x78 tent with 1000 watt air cooled hood. I've got 16 budwider / ghazexC99 crosses in 2 gal grow bags and 3 LSD photos in the larger tent. About 3 weeks left on them. There all huge and really pushing sides out on tent. I feel the 1000 watt light could do around same amount better in larger area. Would it be worth it to build a 5'x5' or 6x6 room for the 1000? How big of space will it fill? What if I combined both lights, how much space then. Thanks for any advice.

A good general rule for HPS lighting is 50 watts per square foot in veg, 60+ for flowering. So you're right on the money in a 4' square tent. I wouldn't go any bigger.
I used the 50 watt per square foot in general I just was hoping the 1000 watt would do better. I was wanting to pull 2lbs from it but I will be lucky to get 1lb. Would it be better to do few less plants in bigger buckets? The tops on these are great but the Lower half is shaded bad. Not sure I'm getting great light penetration. Have the light a little to high for the autos but have to for the photos (there over 5.5 feet counting the bucket). And thanks muddy for the help. Would it be any benefit to run the 400 with the 1000? Like 400 mh and 1000 hps or reversed?

Not to contradict, but I've seen 1000 watt lights kill it in 5x5 tents.
Thanks for advice. I may try doing 12 in 5 gallon buckets or 5 gal airpots before building room. Have you any of you used a light mover? I was thinking maybe a 4 foot rail in a 6x6. Would like a circular one to hang both lights on but there about 4 times the price. Also had another question. What kind of LED would it take to equal the 400 watt HID? Would like to try one in my small tent. Would like one in the big tent too but it be pricey getting one to compete with the 1000
