Hempy buckets still work great! They may be more commonly done with coco/perlite on top and perlite (or hydroton, etc.) on the bottom, rather than perlite and vermiculite, but they're simple and work well.
I don't think people talk about them a whole lot because there isn't really that much to say about them. (Older forums like ICMag somehow went through 700 pages but there's no need to do that again.)
All are clones of Homegrown's Gelato, which spent ~3wks in the aerocloner. Roots were trimmed down to 3-4" before transplanting. 4:1 perlite/vermiculite and straight perlite in the bottom.
I've recently taken up the hempy method. A few tips for others, as I've learned the hard way now:
1. Be careful not to overwater if germinating first in something like a peat or coco puck and then going into a solo cup with 100% perlite, the seedling can easily get waterlogged. What I've found that worked with a coco puck is first waiting until a few of those roots pop out the sides and bottom of the puck before placing it into the solo cup hempy. It also helps to pre soak the solo hempy until runoff before situating the puck into its new home. Once in the solo hempy, it should be good for a couple days relative to humidity, and then only water as needed on the perlite around the perimeter of the cup making sure not to soak the peat/coco puck. Don't be concerned with watering until runoff at this point, only keeping the area surrounding the puck relatively moist so that the puck keeps just a bit moist. Then it's a guessing game until the little roots find the res, but I think the best indicator is watching for an uptick in growth.
2. If germinating straight into the perlite, apparently having the seed pointy side up helps it shed the seed hull easier on the way up. Also be sure not to burry the seed too deep. My Autoflower (Twisted Tree Crinkle Cut) took almost 5 days just to work her way out of an inch of horticulture grade perlite, looking like the the chestburster from "Alien".
