Nutrients Grow Dots?

I was trying to run Earthboxes side-by-side with a build-a-soil Take and Bake kit to compare the two. Pretty sure I had a PH issue on the Growdots to start out. Neither seed germinated, so I popped two more and only one popped in the growdots. I decided to just roll it out and see how it went. Whole grow that plant has looked stunted and had bad coloring.

I decided it really wasn't a fair comparison since the Take and Bake Earthboxes in the same tent were exploding and looked beautiful, so I abandoned my side-by-side and top-dressed the Growdots Earthbox with some BAS Craft Blend and Worm Castings. This totally turned the growdots box around and that single plant started a serious stretch. It stretched taller than the other plants in the tent and the leaves started to look better. Still not good, but better. The Growdots box is starting to stack up now and it will be interesting to see how the buds compare.

If I had it to do over with growdots again, I would use Coco and not Peat. I would also make sure to check the PH before starting and make sure I get it to the recommended 6.2. I would also germinate in a solo cup and transplant instead of germing directly.

Thank you @Zardgreaux - I appreciate it. I am thinking coco in Autopots, with some fertigation until I turn the pot on.

I tried them in soil, promix hp. Worked and made it to the end but definitely need some tweaking. The seedling stage was stunted and by the end I had a very strange looking gangly octopus armed plant.

I ran with un adjusted tap water to see what would happen. I think if you are going coco, I don't know if the breakdown happens fast enough for those first early weeks.

I've seen very little about them. It may have been @HashCakes who ran them with success. Mine was an experiment so do take my results with a grain of salt. Again, made it to finish with 0 care and plain tap water. Some attention will most likely go a long ways.

Thank you! I will tag you in on a grow thread in the event I decide to go this direction.

My seedling stage was definitely stunted and I absolutely have a gangly octopus armed plant now!! I have used bottled spring water this entire grow because my Tap water is gnarly.

The two on the right are SODK in BAS Take and Bake, the one in the middle is SODK with Growdots, Peat, Pumice, and Rice hulls, and the left side is Purple Haze and CBD Crack 1-1 in BAS Take and Bake. As you can see, the GrowDots SODK in the middle is seriously paler compared to the others, but has blown up since it is only plant in that Earthbox. I really should have paid more attention to the PH when I started and will likely give the Growdots a try again this fall.

Yeah, they are a very interesting product. I could not find much posted so just ran em' as a test. I would like to try them again and see if I can't get better results being more careful. I was impressed that I could be so lazy and still end up with a passable end product.
I'm tempted. I'm thinking coco

I'm now thinking coco in autopots with a .5 gallon volume in the top/middle of Roots O and just germ them directly. I expect the Roots O could get them through the first 2 weeks just fine and then hopefully the N etc has diffused through the coco enough by that point.

Make sense @DCLXVI ? I have very little coco experience (and no Autopot exp) so I'm kinda flying blind here.

I'd be curious to see them used in a situation where the grower is really dialing it in. Or as much as possible. Scotty is crazy like a fox, and it seems like these are geared towards newer growers to "make it easier" to harvest a yield. Or at least marketed that way. Last I checked at least, I haven't watched a canna podcast in a long time.

I feel like I'm too much of a control freak to use them. I actually enjoy the torture and ritual of feeding my coco daily by hand.

I've used osmocote style nutrients before on veggie plants, and I'm kind of eh on them. My biggest issue is that they never break down the way, or when I want them to. Anyway, good luck.
