scarification is a chemical process that awakens the seed whenever environmental conditions are right..
generally every seed i scratch the outer casing before i soak it.. it only needs a scratch.. not all the way through the woody shell. enough to break the outer layer. it's like "you've bene rolling around in the sand for a few months and your casing has been worn down by the growing season".
keep them "warm", but not too warm or you'll have bean soup.
if there's no response after ~4 or 5 days i'll drop a drop of h2o2 on them.. preventative vs. molds.. safe for seeds..
next day i'll put a deeper nick in the shell.
next day or so i'll try to crack the shell along the seam (if your seed isn't healthy it will squirt out like putrescent juice..)
if it still doesn't go... shucks.
at that point, you can try drying it out and in a few days give it a few hours soak again. i've heard of some beans being responsive to this.
as a fyi, here's my germ method - i've germed a lot of seeds (not just mj) but ppl like their own methods, so i'm not going to argue that it's "better.."
get a little tub with a lid. like 2" across or so.. wash some perlite and put about a 1/4" of perlite on the bottom of the tub.
put 1/8" of water in.. now you can sit the seeds on top of the perlite (after they get their initial soak), where they're not directly in the water. if the root grows, it doesn't get damaged like it can when they grow into a paper towel.
the tub makes it easy to keep an eye on them.
