Hello All,
So I'm currently on my third auto grow -- I've never grown photoperiod... but I have a few questions for the community regarding some things I've seen and experienced along the way.

My grows have always been successful...in the sense that I got very nice smokeable bud at the end of everything. Yields per each grow as a total have been about the same...id say 1/4 to 1/2 ounce per plant on average.

Im still learning, but ive also learned a lot along the way, and have improved on a lot of things.
But one thing that I can't make sense of, is understanding why in every grow, the size and yields of the plants vary greatly.

In each of my grows i usually grow around 4-5 plants, and every time i notice that they are always subtly different looking, in size and node length.
I always have a spectrum of small to large plants growing, sometimes drastic! is this an autoflower thing?

I'll quickly outline my grow setup, but i'd also like to state that im a scientist by day, so im extra careful to control variables across plants, water, nute, light the same amount...none of this seems to affect the fact that every autoflower i grow, from the moment it breaks its seed shell, is a very different size and shape (and yield) to the others. (and yes I've tried seeds from different retailers -- same thing. (growers choice, and 420 fast buds) )

In my current grow I have a short and stubby plant, and an absolute monster growing at around 3 feet tall ...the largest ive ever grown. All same strain (growers choice gorilla glue), and I've done nothing different at all.

I grow in a 4x4 tent, humidity and temperature controlled at around 60% rh @ 75 degrees, under about 2000 watts (1000x2) of LED full spectrum lights. Im growing in Happy Frog, well mixed with a bit of dolomite lime and extra pearlite. Id say by this grow my watering habits are very good, as i dont really see under/over watering issues at all anymore. I pretty much follow the fox farms trio through the grow. ph my water. usually i'll lst about half of the lot to experiment and see which give higher yields....and honestly i havent seen much of a difference in yield amount. Maybe a bit of an improvement. But the LST doesn't have to do with these genetic variations I'm referencing. Even the lst-d plants -- if i chose to LST one of the 'genetically lucky' ones, it'll push to be taller than a non-LST one that is 'genetically less fortunate'

Anyway, thanks in advance for the help -- maybe im doing something wrong that i can correct and i sound like an idiot blaming genetics (i hope!) or are autoflowers just as much as a genetic roll of the dice as we all are? :coffee2:

@capogino Nice to chat! The scientist part of you knows that genetic variation is very high in open pollination. What most people don't realize most of that variation remains in hybrid cannabis and just a few traits have been manipulated in most commercial seed stock. There are some lines that are maticulassly back crossed to get a more homogeneous strain. There are still different phenos that will pop up. Therefore what you are experiencing is not abnormal but you could try a different breeder. I think Dinafem has some of the most consistent strains. We had a big Solo Cup Grow off last year and the plants were amazingly similar across 40 contestants.

very cool. Their blog has a bunch of interesting posts on genetics, i'll have to read up

do you remember what strain you guys found as consistent from them?
The idea of a more homogenous/stable strain is extremely appealing to me

@Dinafem-Mark is our online rep and the strain was Dinafem Auto Cookies. Mark may chime in here with information about any other strains that may interest you.

Just remember you can still get variation no matter who's the breeder.
