Hi all,

Medijane here. This is my first grow - ever and I’m excited and a little nervous. Some background:

Purpose of Grow: I am 50 years old and live in the US! I enjoyed weed when I was younger, then gave it up for about 15 years. I have a sibling with MS who lives in a legal state in the US. I visit several times a year and have been blown away by how amazing it is to have choices for med’s and just plain ‘ole good weed. Not to mention the edibles, vape oil, CBD’s etc…I also have glaucoma and a couple of other health issues that the medicinal part of Canna really helps. Not to mention my elderly mother, cancer patient friends and others who could benefit from the meds that should be available to everyone..

So I return to my home state where you are lucky to find a bag of “whatever” for $400. When you ask if it’s Sativa or Indica they look at you like you’re a nut job.

Shipping is risky and not something my sibling really wants to do (not to mention the sheer panic and stress of waiting for the mail delivery - or the cops), so I’ve decided to grow my own (GMO - new use for that - haha).

Set-Up (this can be changed if needed - input welcome and appreciated):

Location: Garage. Stealth = very important. Average outdoor temperature 50 degrees F. Average Humidity 70%

Set-up: Grow box 24” wide X 21” deep X 49” - 52” tall. This is actually a wardrobe box lined with radiant barrier. I cut a door in. I chose this because the dimensions seemed about right, it already had a device to hang lights from that can be easily raised, it’s easy to cut for fans/chords, etc… and it’s been sitting in my garage for about 10 years.

My first big question is will this set-up work? I have electricity, access to water, access to the garage from inside my house (no nosy neighbors). Is the size okay and the lining of radiant barrier safe?

Pictures at the end of post..

Equipment & Supplies:

Airflow - exhaust
1 VenTech 4” inline fan and carbon filter 190 CFM - mounted at the top left of the box.

Airflow- intake -, Two computer fans mounted at the bottom right of the box. 5” oscillating fan - can be bigger if needed

PH Pen & PH UP/DOWN

Temperature/Humidity Guage

Timers 3 (24 hour)

Soil:

Nature’s Guide Organic Potting Soil, Perlite (30%)

Nutrients: - NONE - IDK which way to go, I prefer Organic but don't know how much time/expense is involved

Lights:

Mars Hydro 300W LED
Lots of CFL’s

I’ve heard mixing the LED with CFL is a good idea? Not sure???

Seeds:
Purchased through Attitude:

3 each of the following:

  • Dutch Passion Seeds AutoDurban Poison
  • Dutch Passion Seeds Think Different Autoflowering
  • Barneys Farm Seeds Grape Muerto

1 each of the following:

  • Big Buddha Seeds Cheese Automatic
  • Advanced Seeds Auto Heavy Bud

Freebies: (all photoperiod) - I may throw these outside in the spring?

FEMINIZED UFO #1 Next Generation Grapefruit Kush
FEMINIZED UFO #2 710 Genetics Seeds High Priority
FEMINIZED UFO #3 Vision Seeds ChocoLoco

That’s it. So I guess my questions would be:

  1. Will my set up worK? Is it safe?
  2. How many plants in this space?
  3. Which strain(s) for first grow
  4. Should I do Nutes or go organic?

I’m really excited to hear back from anyone who wants to donate some time to help! Thanks in advance & peace!

Hi. Hope the grow works out. Looks good so far. Not grown the others but I know you will be pleased with your Dutch passion seeds. Have got an auto Durban about 7 weeks old. That humidity is high I think. The CFLs although cool to the touch do give out heat. I have problems when lights off with temp dropping. Might try 24 hour light on during winter to regulate temp a bit.

Welcome!!

You sir, are on the fast track to success. Sounds like you've done your homework.

And nice selection of genetics... The dp will blow your mind!

Just make sure you set everything up and do a "dry run" for a little while until you can dial in the Temps and Rh. I don't run leds myself, but there are many skilled led growers here who can help you out with the amount of plants you can pull off.

As for nutes, I'm a big fan of AN. Their pH perfect line is pretty sweet, and great for beginners. Although it definitely can take a nice chunk out of the old wallet.

Good tips and thanks! I didn't even think about the temp drop during lights out. Glad I'm here. I wonder if a small space heater would keep it warm enough during lights out? Yeah the humidity... I'm planning to do a couple of "dry runs" when I get everything hooked up and functioning so I can test that. Excited about the Durban! Hope yours turns out great.

Thanks! I will most def do a dry run when I get everything set up. And yeah, I am a good researcher - let's hope I'm as good a grower (hope, pray, beg, whatever).. I will check out AN. I need something that will be hard to screw up. As for the chunk out of the wallet....I only THOUGHT I spent a lot on dance and music lessons. SMH.

You're already doing great compared to my first run hehee :p For nutes I still use and like the General Organics GO Box, it's about as easy to use as it gets, and being organic it can't burn the plants if mistakes are made :) oh only $40 on the Amazon, looks like this: www.amazon.com/General-Hydroponics-Box-Starter-Kit/dp/B004PS4B08
I think the area looks safe enough. Hard to tell how big it is, but just fyi the Think Different get huge lol, I think only 1 or 2 could fit in there comfortably but will yield a LOT for ya :) btw what's "the other coast"? A fellow east coast member?
