First of all, thanks to everyone on this forum for being such an awesome learning resource for my first grow.

16 days ago, I planted 1 germinated sour orange diesel kush and one germinated forum stomper, both from Mephisto. Both are currently under a spider farmer sf2000 using ocean forest as my medium in a 2x4x6 tent. No nutrients added yet as I had planned to wait till week 4 or 5 before adding any nutes. I’ve been misting the soil surface when I notice it’s dry and I’ve been very careful about overwatering (also trying my best not to underwater). My humidity stays between 40-50% and temps don’t pass 80 or go under 70.

My SODK has been growing steadily but today on day 16 I noticed it’s starting to pre flower already. There are some white hairs developing on top. The plant is still small. Should I worry about this? Also, my forum stomper is growing but very very slowly. It looks healthy, but very small for16 days. Should I stay patient and leave it alone? I really expected more growth by now. Maybe it’s just that there’s more root development going on. Has anyone experienced slow seedling growth like this?

Hi @bantyj234 :welcome: It can be a little slow around here sometimes. I'd try tagging a few people growing in a similar method as you maybe. Lots of helpful people around here.

16 days sounds normal for a plant to show its sex from what I've heard.

I have no experience but am going to regurgitate some things I've read because I'm bored out of my mind. :crying:

Alot of people have trouble with ffof due to reasons I don't really remember (I use coco).
Some type of inconsistencies, ph maybe.

I don't think most people start seedlings in it because it's too hot. Alot of people put ffof in the bottom of their pot and happy frog or something lighter in nutrients in the top half.

5.8 is the ph most people use for coco. Maybe thats a little low?

Forum stomper doesn't like many nutrients in the beginning, it may have stunted her a bit.

Hopefully at least some of that is correct. All in all they look good to me. :goodluck:

Thanks for the response! I’ll look into some soil that’s lighter on the nutes for my next round. I’m really hoping this forum stomper will catch up soon. Regardless, I’m very excited to see how my first shot at this ends up!

I grew with Ocean Forrest for several years before coco. I am not a fan of small amount watering in soil. Coco yes. I watered to some runoff and waited for it to dry well, then did it again. Easy. Ocean Forrest is a hot soil and you don't need nutes for the first 3-4 weeks. Adhere to that and you should be fine. Lots o' luck.

Thank you for the advice. I’m trying my best not to mess up by over/under watering. Seems to be a really common issue with newbies like myself. I figured ocean forest was the easiest choice for my first grow, since I wouldn’t have to deal with nutrients for a few weeks. I’m hoping it wasn’t too hot for my seedlings.

Hello @bantyj234 and welcome to AFN!

Like you, I ran my first grow in FFOF. I also had a relatively low RH in my grow cabinet. I was using airpots which were all the rage a couple of years ago. And it looks like you’re using grow bags.

Remember that your plants will tell you what they need. They’ll droop when over or under watered. You’ll see signs in their leaves when they are missing or have too many nutrients.

For my first grow, I started with 1/4 strength nutrients on day 14. I used 1/4 strength nutrients for a week and then bumped it up to 1/2 strength. Then to 3/4 strength for another week. Then I started with full strength nutes.

Keep on keeping on and good luck.

Thanks for the response! AFN is awesome and I’ve been learning so much here over the last few weeks. I’m on day 22 now and things are looking good! My forum stomper is still trying to catch up, but she’s growing! Buying a small humidifier and increasing my light distance a few inches have shown promising results since I made this post.

I’m gonna stick to that nutrient schedule you recommended. If you don’t mind me asking, what medium would do you prefer to use now? I’m trying to figure out what’s best to use next time. Thanks!

Personally, I’m developing my growing style to be kind of like a lazy man’s approach to growing. I use a nutrient line that is inexpensive and dead simple to measure and mix. It’s a Mega Crop from Greenleaf Nutrients. I typically grow in recycled plastic bottles. I am partial to smaller containers - like one or two liter plastic bottles. If I get free seeds, I will do a test grow in a solo cup to check out the strain. Sometimes I grow in solo cups for fun.

A while back, I found a growing method called hempy buckets. i used to follow the original instructions using a mixture of perlite and vermiculite as my growing medium. However, I am currently liking the drainage that I get from using the modified instructions Which is either hydroton or perlite topped by coco coir. So basically, I don’t have any organic matter in my growing media - it’s all completely inert. That means I have to add nutrients from the beginning. If you want to see pictures, feel free to stop by my current journal. The link is in my signature line.

If you’re growing in soil then you want to jack up your PH to 6.5 They are very sensitive to PH imbalances.
At 5.8, it is too low for soil and could be causing growth issues.
