I am wondering if all ground soil outside is equal? Where i am from we have many large farms. These farms are growing in soil that is from the bottom of a giant lake. They drained this lake and are basically growing crops where the lake use to be. Would this dirt be any better, it is very dark and moist. Almost black. Just wondering if i could save a dollar by collecting some

As TBM said, all soil isn't equal. Around here it's mostly what is called chert, clay with small bits of limestone. No good what so ever for growing weed. Black soil usually indicates a lot of humus, which is good and what you would expect from a lake bottom. Our county Agricultural Extension Service offers soil testing. Last time I had it done it was $15 for the basic test. Also, if you have farmers co-ops, ask them. They usually provide testing for farmers.
