First of all, I was going to do my first grow, try some autos. I was gonna use CFL's 10- 23watt 6500k and 10-40 watt 2700k's But now Im thinking about getting a 400 HPS. Has anyone grown with both? Whats the difference in yield, size buds etc? And how many autos can you keep under 400 watt hps?

Second question is ventalation. I'm making a charcoal filter for the air coming into the grow cabinet. Im using 2 6'' inline fan. Its a fan in the middle of the coupler for say dryer hose. Have one fan for exhaust and one to bring fresh air in, plus small fan inside to blow on plants, will that be enough? The box is 3x3x6ft high, If anyone thinks this size would be better bigger or better smaller, please comment, want the 400 watt HPS to be a good match up with whatever size max box to go with with this light. Im also going to mix in 8 2700k CFLs on the walls during flowering

3rd, whats the cheapest place to get a 400watt HPS light? And should I go with a type hood that you can hook a fan to the hood, or is the type thats just a bulb under a flimsy looking reflector good enough, OR THE TUBE STYYLE ONES?

400watt hps is good in a space like that i have grown under both b4 but now i grow under 2 1000watt hps bulbs, 6 inch inline fans are good for that room depending on the cfm which i think you will be ok and for how many plants you can grow pack that room with as meny as you can, for the light the 400watt use a reflector with it as you might need the heat i think you will be surprised about what you get in that room

Im using 2000watts in a 10x10x6 room with a 6 inch vortex and carbon trust me you will be fine and i grow 30 plants

Good luck if you want to ask me any more question p message me thanks

cheers

In your 9 sq. ft. area you can easily grow 6 plants in 3 gallon pots, 9 if you really want to pack them in. A 400 watt HPS is a good size for that space, IF you can deal with the heat. I would suggest you get a tube style reflector as they are the most efficient when it comes to venting out the hot air. You can hook a piece of duct to it, then to your exhaust fan and pull air from inside the box, through the light, then out. At the very least, one with glass and openings on both sides where you can hook up ducting. I doubt you will need two 6" fans for that space. Your fan, and your carbon filter, need to be on the exhaust side, not the intake. You want to filter the air as it's leaving the grow area to remove the odors. Having it on the intake side won't help. I also think you only need a 4" one. You whole area is 54 cubic feet (3 x 3 x 6) and most 4" fans are around 200 cfm, so will turn the air over in your box almost 4 times a minute.

Lots of cheap HPS systems around from companies like HTG Supply. Most use magnetic coil ballasts. Personally I'd spend a little more and get an electronic ballast and a better quality bulb than what come with the cheap systems. Magnetic ballasts are noisy and give off a good bit of heat. If you do get a magnetic one, plan on having it outside of your grow box so it's not adding to the heat.

I seen a digital one for 119.00 Im just gonna go with that

I run a 400w hps cooltube with a digi ballast....in a small tent....believe me, it will still get hot without proper vertilation of hot out and cool in...I pull air out through a carbon filter, then thru the cooltube, then ducted to a crawlspace......inline fans are typically not nearly enough....check out centrifigal vortex fans...a LOT more air movement and easily adjustable....

I am trying to use my bathroom window as a ventilation system. Maybe I should cut a whole and put in a fan. Any suggesstions?

How are you planning on using the bathroom window? It's you're grow box that is going to get hot from the HPS light in it, not your bathroom.

Ended up going with the 400 watt HPS from HTG supply with the $4 bulb upgrade
