Hi,

Ok, I have been growing Auto's for a couple of years and I'm dangerous enough to usually get some half decent bud of of the strains I've tried. Well, I had to put seed buying on the back burner for awhile, so while that was an issue I germinated some bag seed that I had. I'm assuming they were photo's.

After determining the females in the ones that showed sex which all did and males were whacked. I planted several outside in a gorilla grow and they seem to be chugging along, but I have 2 growing in a tent that after heeding the advice of those on here and going to 12/12, I HAVE BUDS FORMING !!!

These things are like 3 1/2 months old I think and I was about to give up on them ever budding but the 12/12 constantly has done the trick. Now, I haven't grown a photo with any real luck since I was like 18 or 20 and I love the fact that auto's seem to just grow themselves so I don't usually mess with photo's.

Now, I have a relatively small indoor grow area, about 3' high, 2' wide and I have a couple of Mars Hydro lights I really like so far.

After reading the above, what are the benefits of growing photo's in a smaller area or aren't there any real benefits and should I just stay with photo's?

I like the life cycle of autos since I smoke it as fast as I grow it, usually faster than I can grow it!

Now, I realize my ignorance on the light thing may have affected the life cycle, but what is the usual time for a seed to harvest photo inside?? I realize there are great variables involved, but a general indoor life cycle idea would help.

Now, the positives are arguably that photo's produce higher yields and levels of potency than auto's.

But are photo's really better or the question really is, Why should I grow them instead of Auto's?

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, grow what you've got, and if you like it stick to it. I think the only thing that would interest me in a photo is if it was a unique strain not available in auto form.

Lots of pros, and cons, to each. I like the simplicity of the auto. I have limited space and can't utilize the really cool aspects of photos. For example I have no way to take cuttings and make clones as I just haven't the space to do that and grow. Also the quick turn around time means I can count on a break at regular intervals.

If I had legal outdoor grow space? Oh baby. I would love to try some massive photo strains just to see how big they can get.

Well surprisingly autos and photos are fun to grow. They all have their qualities. And they are all different to grow from strain to strain and breeders to breeder no matter what you want to grow if it's Auto or photo.

But when it comes to YIELDS there's no arguing photos have much larger yields there is no Autos out there that can consistently produce a pound of AAA quality smoke. If there was I would grow it.
Potency hey auto's got good potency and a lot of photos have got great potency.
But In my experience with Autos is that they're inconsistent in quality quantity and characteristics . Because they're all grow from seed. You can't make a clone from them so to speak or at least not like you can from a photo plant. And so every single seed plant you pop is a different plant you can never replicate it completely. Whereas with a photo plant you can replicate it time and time again to infinity and have the same quality plant in the end as what you started with in the beginning.
Photos are super easy to grow just like autos you can use the same rules for the most part with a photo as you do in auto. With the exception of tripping the trigger of the 12 hours on 12 hours off light. there's really not that big a difference. Training LS T, EST, But there's even more that you can do with a photo plant such as super cropping, topping, manipulating, manifolding, and defolarization. You can take your time with a photo plant you don't have a set time I've grown them as long as two years before I put them into flower. I know people who have kept their plants alive for as long as 19 years..
I can say one thing about an auto plant also is they all seem to have a similar after flavor and I believe that's because of the ruderalis in the genetics. I don't find this after flavor in any of the photo plants I've ever smoked.
I grow professionally and recreationally. I work on 2 different Farms here in mid Michigan where it's very legal. And then I and my wife are license to grow 24 plants on our property here in mid-Michigan

and then we can have 12 recreational plants on our property in northern Michigan.

I find I can grow strains that are non auto , I am new to growing outdoors and have a very limited place to grow at this time of year , but that does not stop me . The plants in the photo is a Z99 photo , trained to grow low as to be not seen because it is in my front yard . Also it opens up a new world of highs and flavours . Ps I also grow Autos indoors .

Thank you, I am liking your reasoning very much. I have 2 small grow areas so maybe I'll give photo's a run. The one's I have are budding nicely I'll have to get some pics. They were bag seeds from some stuff I bought.

The smell is getting nice on them. I'll have to start an Unknown Strain grow journal.

That's why I love this forum, ask a question and get cool people giving great answers.. Thanks brothers!

I prefer growing autos. I generally find them more challenging to get to beast mode. I also find that they just make me a better grower in general. But if you're in a legal state, you can save a few $$$ and take advantage of all of that free lighting with photos. I guess you can with autos, I just generally prefer my autos indoors. I've got 4 photos outdoors this year, vegged in the tent for 70 days until the heat here takes over then off to the outdoors garden. Here's an Amnesia Haze at almost 9' in height. Just heading into flower.

@7.62 I grow strictly indoors ( the law here) I have suspected this for a while but now have some evidence that autos out yield photos over time.

Here are the final weight numbers for my most recent grow. The plants are experimental and only have numbers.

2108a 192g
2108b 117g
2109a 125g
2109b 187g
2110a 128g
2110b 130g

879g = 31oz

Results from the last photoperiod grow was 1616g in 127 days or 12.724g per day.

This auto grow was 67 days * 12.724 = 852.53g :jump::jump::jump::jump:actual 879g is more than the photoperiod time wise.

But yield is not everything. The Ace Panama Red was over 1 pound and the bud is the best yielding rosin well into the 20% range. It is what I am dabbing as I type.

I find that Photos can handle heat and humidity better until late flower. Autos may be better on heat now and I will be growing some this summer.
