Am wanting to upgrade ole trusty 3x3 to 4x4. Have both a diy cob fixture(2x3500k 2x3000k on a 185 full bore) and a diy qb288 4000k on a 320 dimmable. I want to go the cheap route for now(spending 600$ already on the new setup) and combine the cobs and qbs into one fixture. Anyway my thoughts were to veg with the 4000k qbs at 200w and flower with both the cobs+qbs 380ish w. Swapping the 3000/3500k chips for 2200k amber chips to offset the blue 4000k qbs. Any thought?

You have 3000k, 3500k, and 4000k - you can veg and bloom from start to finish with what you have already. Are you growing photoperiod plants?

I have run the 4k QBs from HLG with the V2 chips all the way start to finish and they had plenty of red in them to produce 6-8 zips per plant with some Mephisto Forgotten Cookies. And I run Cree Cobs in pairs of 3k/4K and have had no issues at all.

I personally feel the higher end chip makers have a better full spectrum graph for there chips that don’t have a ton of holes in the spectrum. I think you could mix and match among those spectrums with little noticeable difference in product quality. I don’t think the lights would be your limiting factor.

Lots of people have tons of anecdotal experience with lights but because we all grow with so many different brands and under so many different conditions it’s really tough to say for sure. I try to stay away from the light section because it’s just so easy to be tempted by every new toy. I was jealous of the new far reds people were incorporating. But then I just looked at my plants and said “ who wouldn’t be happy with that” and I relaxed.

Great advice. Thanks! It is easy to go down the rabbit hole of led lighting lol

If you’re interested, I am currently doing a Grow with 2 diy COBs at 3500K and will be turning on a 135W HLG QB288 3000K toward later veg and through flowering. Link in my signature.

Good luck on your Grow!
