Photoperiod Cannaficionado's Next Barneys Farm Grow in my 3x3

Germination
  • So its almost been 24 hours since I popped the seeds in their 10 gallon homes.

I know it might be a little too big of a pot for 2 photos in a 3x3 but I wanna see what a plant will do when its roots are completely unrestricted.

My 5 gallons from the last grows were solid bricks by the time I chopped my plants and I chopped them all kinda early. Was gonna do 7 gallons but I figured even then a 40-50 day veg plus another 60-70+ days in flowering would pretty much brick out a 7 gallon as well.

Anyway I wanted to mention pot size because I never did before and I wanted to throw a couple updates up as well today.

    First being environmental conditions
    Screenshot_20230304_092801_AC Infinity.jpg

Humidity keeps going up and down 10-15%. Drops as low as 45% but hops right back up. Highest its been is 67%. So im guessing mid 50% is about the average. Ordered a stand alone hydrometer and thermometer to stand in there as well.

First of all the soil was pretty darn dry in the bag so I hydrated each pot with a 1/2 gallon of water while declumping and prepping the pots, after sewing each seed I gave them about 1 cup of water right on top of the seeds and by the morning the top dusting had already completely dried out and all the way down the sides was dry as well.

So today I gave each pot 1.5 gallons of 6.55ph spring water. Watered 90% of it around the edges of the pot to avoid hydrophobic spots while germinating and the remaining 10% got poured directly around the seedling to make sure the soil directly around them doesnt dry out too much. There was run off but probably less than 2% of the total watering, and btw 10gal pots that are fully saturated are heavy as hell. I knew it would be more than double the weight of a 5 but jeeeeeeez its heavy.

Also ordered new elastic trellis netting for this grow. Got 2 as I plan on netting twice to really maximize the canopies sq footage.

Also I would like some input from people watching on supplemental light bars for grow tents. Seems like from the last grow I could use them for directly under the main canopy as everything was larf from the last run.

Ac infinity makes a 16" pack for $100usd. It comes with 4 individual bars controlled by a seperate controller or the controller 69. Color temp is 3700&5000k but there is no info as to par or ppfd output. The 16" bars are a total of 40 watts and the 11" bars are 27 watts I believe, both use samsung lm301h diodes. Im just wondering if this seems mor gimicky or if anyone thinks it will actually help in flower?.

Curiosity got the better of me
  • So just like always Im impatient and anxious during germination. Uncovered my beans to ease my mind as one seemed like it was a little premature, but nevertheless both have a tap root already 36 hours later. Im guessing I will see the seed break ground by monday night/tuesday morning with the way things are going.

Also got a present from the parents today unexpectedly. Got a large humidifier, dehumidifier and air purifier today. Guess they wanted new ones. The humidifier is a 5 gallon and has already helped stabilize amd raise my humidity to 60% in my tent and to 50% in the room. Not using the air purifier down there but the dehumidifier is plugged in too, may need it later in flower as it will be the dead middle/end of summer by mid to late flower.

    Broke ground
  • So both seeds have made their appearance. Sowed at around 2pm friday and I can see them popping out today at 6am.

Now that they can see light or will be seeing light shortly Ive reverted back to a timer schedule of 18/6. Light is hanging about 18 inches above the pots at setting 4/10. Should be plenty of light for some seedlings. Ready to get this train rolling!

    Thanks for stopping by.

    (Update before bed)
Helmets are off lol. So Im offically calling today day 1

Gave the pot on this one a full 180° rotation this morning. She was leaning heavily towards the center. Basically a 45° angle as you can see. Healthy and happy though!

Another happy girl, she didnt get rotated as she is standing straight up as of right now. Healthy green, seems to be growing a tad faster than the other. Its first true set is much further developed than the lemon tree. Basically had them as soon as it shook its bean husk, but it shook it as it weasled through the surface, I had to dehelmet the lemon tree.

Also my elastic trellis is in place. New thermometer/hydrometer is working well. On par with the ac probe so at least I know that they are both accurate.

    Thanks for stopping by!

    Ps.

Bored so I figured Id add a couple more pics. Looks like the tangerine is already starting to get some leg to it. Its already about twice as tall as yesterday.

    Day 5
  • Day 5 starting strong.

Watered the entirety of both pots yesterday's with about 1.75 gallons of ph'd spring water, ph to 6.5. Minimal run-off but it might have been a little too much for the tangerine. Her leaves be a tad droopy.

Besides the watering everything is going exceptionally well. 2 solid starts. Temps and humidity holding well even with the drastic weather changes outside.

And both together for a size reference

Gotta say I am thuroughly enjoying this hobby. Well the growing part, the drying and curing part is the part that really gets me. Nothing like growing nice bud just to ruin it during the last couple steps. Only one out of 4 of my plants from my last run is the quality I was hoping for, hopefully both these girls get done right this time.

    End of week 1
  • Today is day 7 of the grow. Not much to update. Seedlings are building roots, second node is developing on both plants so everything is chugging along nicely.

Conditions followed by the tangerine dream, then the lemon tree

The way the light got captured by the camera makes the tangerine dream look a little yellow but its actually a little greener than the lemon tree.

    Day 9
  • Not much to report. Can say with certainty that having 10 gallon pots is nicer for watering, though the below pictures may look a little dried out its not. Watered 4 days ago just to hydrate everything well, the bags are at least 75% of their watered weight still. Figured most of it would have just evaporated by now. Been spritzing the top with a spray bottle to keep the top hydrated, my humidifier was helping but it ran dry yesterday and shut off so humidity tanked a bit overnight as well.

Anyway 2nd node is almost fully formed on both plants. Thinking about giving them a light watering, just around the plant itself to make sure they have water right by the roots. The leaves are a little curled down like they are starting to droop a bit so idk, at least on the lemon tree.

    Day 10
  • Didnt think I made a post yesterday but I guess I did.

Plants moving along nicely though, the tangerine dream seems to be a little more hearty than the lemon tree and with that said it does "look" like something is wrong with the lemon tree, its growing but the leaves have these pale white idk lines going through the leaves, almost looks like calcium buildup from the humidifier but its actually part of the leaf. Im not concerned about it and it doesnt come through on pictures well as they are very thin and wispy looking discoloration, the plant is still chugging along though so if it starts to slow down I will address it but as of now it seems to be unaffected, just a tiny bit slower than the tangerine.

This plant just seems to like everything about being alive, gave the girl about 1 gallon of water early today to keep peat hydrophobia away, she was more hydrated than I though as I had a good deal of runoff about 20 minutes after watering this one. Took it like a champ though

    Lemon Tree
    20230315_061735.jpg

As you can see by the pic, the white lines I mentioned get bleached out by the light in the tent and by the flash of the camera. But like I said besides the curling on the first true set nothing else seems to be wrong and thats definitely from light intensity. Bumped my light up to 30% at about 16-18 inches over the pot about 2 days ago and the lemon tree does not like it, so instead of turning it back down I raised the light about a foot which put the ppfd at around 250-280, couldnt get a solid read for some reason. Hopefully the leaves will flatten out as the tips are miring in the dirt and I dont want the tips to get fried from touching the soil. Also gave this one a gallon of water to and 0 run off on this one so I think it needed it compared to the tangerine.

    Conditions
    20230315_061748.jpg

Rh is a little low. Need a new filter for the hand me down humidifier I got from my parents, its completely calcified about half way up the filter. They arent cheap either about 25-35 bucks depending on if I go to a store or order them. They also only last about 60 days max according to my parents even with humidifier additives to keep the calcium and slime build up at bay. But summer is right around the corner so raising humidity wont be an issue soon, getting rid of it will be...

    Day 13
  • So I think I may have figured out whats wrong with my lemon tree. I got a decent picture of the effected leaves and Im leaning towards TMV (tobacco mosaic virus) looks pretty spot on with what I see on infected plants online. Its hard to see on the 3rd pic but there is discoloration in splotches, no real consistency to the spots.

    20230318_080830.jpg

Shes still growing. Slowly. Much slower than the tangerine.
    20230318_080908.jpg

    And the Tangerine
    20230318_080904.jpg

The tangerine is doing phenomenally well, but the wrinkles and spots on the lemon tree make me wonder, as long as it continues to progress Im not gonna change anything, but if it is TMV Idk if I should pull it. Says the only way its transferred is by actually touching the plant after handling infected tobacco. I smoke cigarettes but I dont roll my own or handle raw tobacco ever so I do have my doubts, but it looks just like it
