Hey all,

I'm wondering if any long term DWC growers have had success with brewing microbes to prevent root rot without using EWC?

I'd like to just use Recharge and molasses.

The reason I'd like to skip the EWC is I've read the there can be pests like springtails etc in it. I once had springtails infest parts of my house and it took about 4 months of many different pesticides in various forms applied regularly before they completely vanished.

Just use the recharge right in the reservoir. Watch that is does not get too viscous which will hinder oxygenation. I only used microbes two days before the reservoir change. Watch PH close as the microbes multiply like crazy.

Hey MOG,

Thanks for the advice! I'll keep on mind adding microbes shortly before a rez change as a way to keep pH more manageable.

The thing about recharge though is that it actually has some molasses in it... I've heard that I shouldn't add that to the rez because it could actually feed pythium.

I happen to have a bag so that's why I'm looking at it. Based on what I've read, if I put it in aerated water for 48 hours the microbes will consume the molasses and multiply.

I've seen others actually cure root disease in similar fashion, but they usually use EWC as well. I'm looking to prevent it is all.

Sugar feeds ALL of the microbes. If you are running Botanicare HydroGuard pythium is not a concern. What happens is what I have already warned you about. Microbes turn this into snotty soup with a strong bio-film that cannot aerate properly for the roots and this anerobic condition is bad, bad, bad!
