It's definitely rootbound. But they can survive. Check out some of @St. Tom grows. He does some amazing solo cup grows.

Just added one biggish hole

If you zoom in on my cup you can see I have a bunch of tiny pin holes on the side of it and I have a bunch of slightly larger ones on the bottom. I try to keep them small so the roots don't sneak out.
