Breeding an auto x non-auto cross for generations - will the auto trait still show?

Hi,

I'd just like to pose a question to those who have more breeding knowledge than me (everyone really).

I have auto male x non-auto female seeds that I want to bring forward a few generations. As I don't have that much height I usually grow on a 12/12 light schedule from seed, or thereabout.

My question is: If I grow for a few generations under 12/12, and only pick the best genetic plants: smell, smoke etc etc (rather than the ones I see going auto under a larger light time) - will the auto gene follow in a number of the plants & should this be greater or smaller in number with every generation?

I know this may be a "how long is a piece of string" answer, but I have to ask.

This question doesn't make much sence to me. I can't figure out if you want to find out if your plants are going to auto or not? I sure would want to know. I keep my main bubbly tank and tote grow room both at 20/4 schedule cause I want to see if the plants are going to auto or not in the totes. If they don't show sex in about six weeks I have a decision to make either throw them out or put them into my carousel room whick is 12/12. The other thing I want to know about auto/photo crosses is how they smoke so I grow a few out at 12/12. I have found that some have large ammounts of auto in the F1 cross while others don't and need to be backbred.

The thing that I really want to find out this year if I can is:

Do plants that don't auto in the F1 of an auto/photo cross do they respont better to backbreeding them to the original auto again? I think this would take much of the characteristics of the photo plant out of them. This would be undesireable.
but leave,

By just breeding together two F2s that did photo from the original auto/photo F1 breeding would this in itself increase the auto percentage in the F2 breeding.

I have a feeling I am just going to have to find this out for myself because I don't think I will get any consistant answer to this question.

Yes the aim at the end is to have an auto cross. I was just wondering that even if I didn't look for the auto in the plants (as growing 12/12), would it still be in a number of the offspring at say f4 level. I'm probably not asking the question right at all.

Basically I'm hoping not to have to have two different rooms, as I don't have the room.

The offspring from the cross would be all photos. Breed those together and that generation will be 1\4 auto. Seperate and breed these autos each to each other and all the offspring will be auto. They will have 1\2 of both genes but be fully auto.

I respectfully disagree with this. I get autos from the Fi cross. Not all the seeds auto but a lot do. I think it depends a lot on how strong the auto genes are in the plant you use for the auto.. I have nver got all photos and no autos.
