First of all :welcome:

I miss having a thread in one of the coolest subforum on AFN and with my current grow coming to an end and me having plenty of time at the moment having a flu, I did some preparation today.

My current grow is suffering from serious PH issues, so I thought I would take the time to do it right this time. I still haven't figured out what went wrong last time, apart from me being pretty baked mixing the soil. I didn't flush the added Perlite and maybe added a little too much gardening lime. This time I will not add lime unless I find the PH off when measuring it in a few days.
Let's get started :pass:

Strain: White 'n' Bubbly (Walter White x Hubbabubbasmelloscope)

Soil:
60% BioBizz Lightmix with Perlite. 20% quality potting soil. 20% extra Perlite. (Picture cheats a little)

This time I flushed the Perlite and was pretty surprised of all the dust in there. Made a PH test that came out at 8.0 before getting flushed. That could be one of the reasons of my current grow is a mess PH wise. I also added some other soil that has some great stuff in it. It's a little hot so I'll try a mix with lightmix. The soil has some great root encouraging stuff in it and a wide range of goodies. I have had 2 runs with just that soil and each grow delivered a massive rootball hard to break apart without any root enhancers. I think a mix of those two will do some great stuff in combination and still controllable nutrition wise.

So where am I now? I've mixed the soil. Watered it lightly with 1ml/L Fishmix. I have bagged it up and put it away.

There it will stay for the next 10-14 days cooking nicely waiting to be gifted with the most beautiful seed I can find in the package. I will test the PH in some days when it has settled and adjust if needed. It's impossible to lower a high PH in the middle of a grow I learned the hard way. It's much easier the other way around and this time I want it right from the beginning.
So this was really just a slow start, but I had a good time preparing the next grow and wanted to share :pass:

More to come when we get a little closer...:peace:

Good luck bud!!
What is the LED you're using?

Thanks. It's a Vipar bought on Ebay 8 months ago. Great price and has given some nice results so far. The only downside is the fans. They are a bit noisy and I have thought about changing them, but that will have to wait until they start to sound like a crashing plane. It's not really a big deal though, but that's the only issue I can think of.

Lets get this started :watering:

Curent grow will be harvested in 3 days so I can finally get this one going. I'm excited to be back with another Mephisto and I hope I can bring it some justice and it will bring me another wonderful smoke. Went to the fridge and had a look at what I got. Found 12 grade A+ seeds, as always, from Mephisto and I have seen some different packages. Picked one that went into a glass of tapwater, where it will be for the next 20 hours. If cracked, at that time, it will go straight to soil (Ph is right this time. At least for now). If not, it will be the paper towel method until tap is visible. I'm not really a fan of seeing a 1-2cm tap root before planting. All I want to see is a living seed. Nature will take care of the rest without the risk of damaging the tiny root. Let the action begin.

20 hours later seed is still floating and won't stay down. First time I experience this, but I'm not giving up on this one. I believe it's viable. Doesn't seem dead to me and I imagine I can see some very small signs of cracking, when checked through microscope. Placed between a couple of plates in some damp paper towel and will have a look at it in 16 hours, before deciding it's destiny.

48 hours has passed from the soaking and not a single sign of progress. I hate to quit, when I feel I still have a chance, but because the seed didn't sink in 20 hours and still no sign of anything I decided to give it up.

That was a wrong decision and I should have learned to go with me gut feeling. I cracked the seed to see if there was anything in there...

...it was very much alive.

New seed placed in a glass of water :rolleyes1:

Have you ever just gone straight to soil after your 20-24 hour soak? That's all I've ever done and only had one not sprout.

I really don't have a strict plan.

I have used straight to soil with or without soak. Paper towel method with or without soak. Just to see what results I get and this time I have decided to do it like this. If I don't count a bad batch of seeds I got once, I have not had any that didn't germinate yet. This one I killed, because I thought it was dead. I have read several places that a seed that don't sink, is not viable and most likely dead. Well, not in this case.

I prefer to see the seed is alive before it goes into soil. Otherwise I just start to dig in the soil on day 3 with a needle and a headlamp like an archaeologist if it hasn't showed
