Will a 600w hps raise concern with the electric board if the place was using very little electric but now a 600w hps is running 18/6?

Hey bud!
How many kilowatt hours are you at per day/month? You would be adding approximately 10.8 kilowatt hours per day with the 600. If you find out the percent increase in use using your bill, you should get an idea of whether or not it would look odd... of course if you're in the northern part of the northern hemisphere then it might just look like a seasonal energy use increase.

A 600W light would be equivalent to putting a 5000 BTU AC window unit in your home. If you are on a digital meter then it is possible to be a little more telling because a 600W light doesn't cycle on and off like an AC unit will so they can see a spike of 600W for an 18 hour period. In my opinion, that does look suspicious. On an analog meter, the one that has to be read by hand, it will not be noticeable other than the increased usage.

My electric company went to digital meters a year ago and I hate it. I run 1000W 12/12, 600W 24/0 and 430W 18/6. When they went to digital they sent a notice saying that they would not be providing leo with any data without a warrant. I suppose there are a lot of people around my area that posed concerns about them. After a year now, I haven't seen anything suspicious but that is a personal choice, what you feel comfortable with and of course it is going to be highly dependent on your electric company and what their intentions are. I would hope they have better things to do than be inspecting everyone's usage for small increases.

Happy days so you think I'll be okay? It goes quick when the light is on compared to when it's off

Just to reiterate, that is a personal choice. I never make assumptions when dealing with someone's safety, I can only provide you with my thoughts based on what I know. I run several thousand watts in lighting and haven't had problems. That isn't to say they don't bust in the door tomorrow, that is a constant threat we all deal with daily.

I will say that 600W is easy justified as a small AC unit or space heater depending on the time of year and I do not believe anyone would ever look twice at that small of an increase in usage. My rates at ~.09/kW would increase total costs by $29.16 running 600W at 18/6 for 30 days.

It is your call to make.
