Depends on the light. For example, a single Mars Hydro SP3000 would cover 2x4, where as you'd need two HLG 135's v2's to cover the same area. Reputable light manufacturers will show the recommended tent size / footprint on their product's website.

Some like having multiple lights to adjust for different height plants as they run perpetual grows

Depends on how much you want to produce. 2x4 done well could get around pound. I don't like single plant grows because if that plant dies then it's a restart.
