Depends on a few factors with the main one being what size containers you use. If you want to completely fill out the whole 4x8 canopy you would probably want 7-10gal pots. If you just want to just use 4x4 area & grow something else in the other 4x4 3-5gal pots should do it
I'm not the best grower out there and rarely hit 6 ounces on a autoflower plant. Having 5 autoflowers weighing 6 ounces each would stuff my 3x3 but would still fit. I think your gonna have a hard time filling a 4x8 with only 5 auto's. However, some guys do pull off some monster auto's.

Yeah this is only my second auto run well not yet but it will be after I chop these two monsters down. My first auto run was an I LGM white widow…….. didn’t make it to the finish line lol also four-way low stress train, I don’t know if that’s gonna be a viable option for auto flowers I might just low stress train them and defoliate them……but who knows lol I heard any defoliation or training is a bad idea?? Idk if their guna fill a 5-7 gal pot of coco, their web sight says 60-64 day life span
If your aim is to fill a 4 x 8 then first thing I'd decide is to use some type of hydroponic set up. I'd use shallow water culture, with them all draining into a single reservoir.
Auto respond well to both defoliation and any sort of HST or LST or topping.
I am hydro, coco dtw. Also when should I train them? Feed schedule? When should I push them over 400ppms?
I 4 way lst to fill out my space but it takes a few weeks for them to bounce back from topping, but if you say they respond well I try to do this with them.

I guess first you have to decide if you're going to top, or not. If so then topping at 4th node is good. I give them 1000ppm after two weeks. Not saying you should give them that but it doesn't hurt. Topping or training usually begins after two weeks.
