I use something between 80-120 grit , just trying to scuff up the shell so water can penetrate better. Some people even scrape the edges where the shell meets. And make sure if you soak your plugs, that squeeze it out a little so you don’t water log the seeds. Think of how like you wring out a sponge when you squeeze it but you don’t wanna squeeze it to death, you want it to still hold a little water. I try to squeeze about half of what it hold on its own if that makes sense. It’s hard to describe, but if you soak the cubes just squeeze out about half the water so they stay wet and don’t forget to mist the dome

Aside from building your own, and not accounting for the floraflex system, are there any other top down automated watering systems? I know there are a plethora of bottom feeding systems but Im not interested in those.

I got an easy DIY for ya: Res, timer, pump. Riser to hold pot & for drainage. Thats it.
