Indoor Eggs Auto Adventure

It’s been a long time since I last updated this thread, it’s been a long time since I last grew. There are various reasons: time, work, family – life in general. Along with a nosey neighbour who is also a colleague of Mrs Egg, she works in education so not great if cover gets blown, also, plenty of reserves to not actually need to grow. Many reasons and many excuses but I have missed it, so today is the day I resurrect this thread and introduce the current grow. I’m at day 50 something at the moment so it will be a bit of a photo dump, but I will start with an introduction.

Apart from the reasons above I was a bit disillusioned with the whole growing, harvesting, trimming, curing treadmill, and a break has certainly done me good, but as I neared the end of my reserves I got to thinking about a small grow and mentioned it to Mrs Egg. She’s been intrigued by the whole CBD thing and after talking through a growing and harvesting strategy she was happy with it was time to get started. To make it interesting for me, I decided to make it more of a sciencey thing and grow a full CBD strain, a mixed CBD and THC strain and a high THC strain for comparison. I looked around and Dutch Passion seemed the natural choice, I got online and ordered 3 each of Charlottes Angel, Elephant and SFV OG – all autos of course – and as I waited for delivery, I got the tent set up again. I also invested an a new, and better, dehumidifier as my old one had packed up since last used, and it was too small to realistically cope with the space anyway. I’m really glad I did as this has kept RH in a much tighter range as the plants have grown.

The seeds arrived a few days later and I was pleasantly surprised by the inclusion of 2 free Auto Trichomes and Cream seeds. I was only going to grow 1 of each but chucked the 2 freebies in as well – they either would, or they wouldn’t. The 2 freebies plus the Elephant and SFV OG got going straight away but after a few days no sign of Charlottes Angel, so I put a second one into damp paper and hoped. Sadly, this too did nothing so the third was placed and everything was crossed. This did pop and grew away but by the time it was above soil it was 2 weeks behind the others. She’s quite small, as you will see in the coming photos; she was crowded out and unable to compete as the others began their stretch, but she is going to produce so all is not lost, and we will have something for a comparison smoke at the end. I should just say that these are all being grown organically in 11L pots of Plagron Light Mix with 2 Bio Tabs per pot, and they have been receiving BAC PK Booster and Biobizz Cal Mag as needed from around day 30.

Not sure who is still around, who’s new and who’s even interested but here we are, enough chat and onto the photos…

Yesterday.

Here we are on day 59 and that familiar smell grows by the day

I’m running a Spider Farmer SF2000 at 70% power on a 20/4 schedule. This has been steadily raised with the plants growth but is now as high as it will go and some damage to the upper leaves is apparent on both the SFV OG back right and the Trichomes and Cream back left. These are both a similar height, and the tallest plants in there, so guessing this is light induced and not a deficiency. I’ll keep an eye on things and might knock the light down to 65% but hoping all will be fine this late in the grow.

Well here we are on day 61.

And the eagle eyed will notice the lack of Charlottes Angel - the runt. I remember the first Jurrasic Park and I think it was Jeff Goldblum who said 'nature finds a way'. Well she did. She found a way of turning a feminised autoflower into a male destroyer of harvests, a nightmare; and she was sneaky. I hadn't noticed the male flowers in amongst the lower female flowers 🤦‍♂️ hopefully I've caught things before any damage is done 🤞 but only time will tell. I'm doubly annoyed as this was the CBD only plant that I was looking forward to (as was Mrs Egg!) So no comparison smoke and no CBD seeds left.
I think this was probably due to the stress of trying, and failing, to compete with siblings 2 weeks older. She never filled the pot, didn't reach the light, never drank much, wasn't in a position to hold her own let alone compete, and has ultimately put 2 fingers up to her situation in the hope things improve for the next generation. No next gen and she's out, only 4 remain...

Well, the first grow in nearly a year is entering its final stages (photo from Sunday, day 72), frosty looking with trichomes a plenty. Currently about 50/50 clear and cloudy so just need to wait for a few amber – it always takes longer than you think! with the tent having that familiar smell. The Trichomes and Cream are quite different in habit with one being tall with a main cola and side shoots (back left) and the other (back middle) flatter with multiple, similar sized colas. They differ in smell as well; the tall one is unmistakably sweet while the shorter one is sweet it has undertones of sick with burnt rubber/plastic. The SFV (back right) is equally big with lovely firm buds and that classic citrussy earthy pine smell, she’ll probably be first for the chop. 😁 There has been no training and all three have been able to express themselves naturally with limited leaf removal to stop too much shading. In future I think I’ll stick to just three plants as these could have easily filled the whole space – the Trichomes and Cream in the back right is unable to support the weight of the buds on its side growth and is falling out the front of the tent when I open it! The elephant (front middle) hasn’t really been able to keep up, let alone compete so, having been shaded out is quite a bit smaller, with airier buds. Not to worry, I’ll probably run it again next grow, and as one of the three to give it a chance.

I went organic with Biotabs for base feeding and supplemented this with BAC PK Booster from pre-flower (around day 30). I have pretty much applied BAC every watering, going water only once or twice, and increasing the dose from 1ml/l up to 4ml/l since then. I think I got a bit behind what the SFV needed so could probably have gone with an even higher dose for her. Having tried many different feeding schedules and approaches, both organic and synthetic, this has been by far the easiest with no pH’ing and no measuring EC, and it’s pretty cheap - I’ll definitely be repeating this in future. 👍
